In Los Angeles during the summer of 2020, William made multiple trips to help his girlfriend, Meaghan Glover, clear her grandmother's house after her passing. Her grandma was a hoarder. Her father, Clarence, had passed away the year prior leaving all of his personal affects behind in the same house, though, most of them were stored inside the garage in dull blue plastic bins.

In the rafters of this garage sat an acoustic guitar, untouched for years. When the guitar was reached, it was in surprisingly good shape. The guitar had survived the ebb and flow of the weather cycle, the humidity, and the heat fluctuations of Southern California with no noticeable neck warping, no cracks in the body.

It was no surprise that the guitar did not hold the conventional E Standard tuning. Instead the guitar had delightfully taken a new tuning. The tuning was Ab E Bb E* Ab C#*; the * representing quarter tones not found in conventional 12 tone equal temperament.

"Clay" was inspired by the tuning found on Clay's guitar, and the events that took place in the summer of 2020.
